Company Bio

Antonietta Vicario makes dances (AVMD), an all female company, formed in May 2003. Artistic Director, Vicario, created the company to unite to unite a group of powerful and underexposed women. The company is committed to exploring female identity through their work. AVMD has been singled out for creating work that “is a reality check, resonating with the power of live performance in this age of virtual entertainment” (Christy Ann Brown, The Independent) and for choreography that "unfolds magically" (Jennifer Mayer, The Columbia Spectator).

The company performed their first evening length work, touch.DEPRIVATION, at the Joyce SoHo, where they were awarded a subsidized performance series and at The George Washington University in D.C. The piece was performed to sold-out audiences. After touch.DEPRIVATION, AVMD was granted a week long residency at Workspace for Choreographers, where they began hyper.THERMIA, their second evening-length work. This piece was built as a movement installation performed in the round at Chez Bushwick, one of Brooklyn’s hippest performance spaces. hyper.THERMIA was Vicario's first experience creating work in alternative spaces, moving from the theater into an intimate environment.

AVMD's third evening length work, I cannot escape being me so that is what I will show you, was presented at Dance New Amsyterdam, where Vicario is 2006-2007 artist-in-residence. The piece will also be performed this summer, 2007, at The American Dance Festival. AVMD has been received funding support through The American Music Center's Live Music for Dance Program and Meet the Composer's Creative Connections Program. AVMD has also been showcased at Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, Movement Research at the Judson Church, Velocity Dance Center and through Chez Bushwick's AMBUSH performance series.
